A “just wear it” attitude is where the Shoei Hornet DS Helmet excels. It is specifically designed for the adventure touring and dual sport markets. It works as well as possible over the widest range of dual-sporting conditions.

You’ll Just Love the Way The Best of Touring and Dual Sports Design Are Combined in The Shoei Hornet DS Helmet

The Shoei Hornet DS helmet, specifically designed for the adventure touring and dual sport market works as well as possible over the widest range of dual-sporting conditions.  The Shoei Hornet helmet overcomes the dual sports enthusiast’s dilemma of whether they should ride with a full face, on-road helmet lacking the air flow, visibility, eye shade, and style of a motocross helmet… or use the motocross helmet, goggles, and buffeting visor on the street with its limited face protection, high levels of wind noise, and lack of thermal protection in cold temperatures.  Shoei in effect offers two helmets for the price of one without sacrificing capability under any scenario making it the best of both worlds.

The Shoei Hornet DS offers both maximum head protection and maximum comfort and it looks cool.  The fit and finish are excellent.  The helmet is extremely comfortable on your head; and you seriously look the part.  If you select the matte black version you can look wicked like a fighter pilot. Both the shield and visor can be removed to further enhance dirt or street riding. If long distances of pavement are the necessary, removing the visor will help eliminate wind buffeting, and removing the shield makes a little extra room for traditional off-road goggles if dirt is the norm.

The three-dimensionally curved face shield can be adjusted from fully closed to full open under the visor using 4 separate detente positions. Ventilation is handled by 4 adjustable intake and 3 exhaust vents. Some of the intake air coming in through the nose piece is deflected upward to help prevent fogging of the shield when fully closed. The best ventilation feature is the adjustable mouthpiece; it closes and opens at the flick of a finger and allows for a generous flow of air.   A chin curtain is prevents drafts — both decreasing noise and adding warmth on the coldest of rides.

Features:

  • Helmet can be used in three configurations: with visor and shield, with just shield, or with just visor
  • AIM+ Shell construction with sizes XXS-XXL
  • Colors:  Black, Crystal White, Light Silver, Matte Black, Matte Deep Gray
  • DOT and Snell 2005 Approved
  • A wide, 3-dimensionally curved shield
  • Visor includes a front air intake to channel air into top of helmet
  • Shutter behind nose cover directs air flow to clear shield fogging
  • Fully removable 3-D interior
  • 5-layer cheekpads that are channeled for eyeglasses
  • Breath guard and chin curtain included
  • 5 year warranty and Shoei’s superior customer service

In stage one the Shoei Hornet DS comes complete with a moto-style visor and street-style shield (clear is included, and light smoke tint is available). The visor is designed short and stout to block enough sun and roost without causing too much buffeting at higher speeds.

In stage two (or full-dirt) you can remove the shield and rock your goggles, albeit smaller-framed goggles as the eyeport isn’t as big as those of full-on moto buckets. In stage three (full-street), you can ditch the visor and cue-ball down the fast lane.

One of four intake vents is designed into the visor where a channel forces air through a gasketed seal and into the vent – pretty high-tech until you remove the visor and are left with a gaping hole. But fear not, as Shoei provides all of the plugs and kit to cater for the different configurations.  Though located traditionally, the mouthpiece vent is unique to the Shoei Hornet DS because of the face shield.

Ease of use and real-world application make the Shoei Hornet great for zipping around town or busting down hard-core trails.  A “just wear it” attitude is where the Shoei Hornet DS Helmet excels.

If You Were Ever Going To Buy Yourself a Shoei DS Hornet, Now Is The Time…

The feedback from various motorcycle gear websites to date reinforces our verdict that it is a convenient comfortable flip-up helmet presenting good value for money.   We’d give it 5 out of 5 stars as part of this Shoei D.S. Hornet helmet review.

Right now there’s a major deal going on with Shoei Helmets. A friend of mine informed me that the reason is because they’re running a huge promotion to boost their brand and stand out amongst their market even more.

Essentially they’re heavily discounting their product just so they can dominate the motorcycle helmet market. However I won’t be surprised if they increase the price back to normal shortly, so I would recommend you go straight to their site right now and buy yourself a DS Hornet ;
